Copy of the pinkas (record book) of the "Somech Noflim" charitable association to benefit the poor, founded in Vilna in 1871 by the 10 people listed on page 2. Pages 3-4 contain a "kol koreh," a call to the public to join and support the organization whose goal is to help honorable, hard-working members of the Jewish community who have fallen on hard times, and can no longer support themselves and their families. Other communities already have such organizations, and it's high time that Vilna has one also. Pages 5-6 include the moral exhortation of Rabbi Yitzchak Eliyahu ben R. Shmuel Landau, the magid (preacher) of Vilna, on the importance of khesed (kindness), and the religious significance of the organization.
