Shimen (Szymon) Dzigan (1905-1980) was born in Lodz, Poland and began performing c. 1928 with Yisroel Shumacher (Szumacher) in the Ararat literary cabaret in Lodz. In 1935, they founded their own cabaret company at the Nowosci Theater in Warsaw. They also starred in a few Yiddish films. During WWII, Dzigan and Shumacher fled to various Soviet localities, where they reestablished their company. They were arrested and spent four years in a prison and labor camp. They returned to Warsaw in 1947 and left for Israel in 1950. They continued to perform together, touring throughout the world. In 1951-1952, they managed their own theater in Buenos Aires, and in 1958, established their own theater in Tel Aviv. In 1960, Dzigan and Shumacher parted ways, and the following year Shumacher died. Dzigan continued to perform comedy for another 20 years.
