Poland (Vilna Archives) Collection. Posters.

Description: This subgroup of the Collection on Poland (Vilna Archives) consists of about 2500 posters, mostly from the 1920s and 1930s, relating to several hundered Jewish communities in Polish cities and towns. The topics covered in this subgroup are similar to those reflected in the main Collection on Poland and include the following: Political organizations such as Agudas Israel, Bund, and Zionist organizations such as He- haluz, Mizrachi, Poalei Agudas Yisrael, Poale Zion. Community elections, elections to the Sejm (Polish Diet). Business and economics: banks, credit unions, taxes. Labor: trade unions, strikes, unemployment, high cost of living., economic depression.  Cultural activities and groups: Yiddish cultural organizations, lectures on literary topics, lectures about the challenges of modern life. Health and Health care: events and lectures organized by TOZ (the Polish counterpart of the OSE) about tuberculosis, control of epidemics, public health and hygiene.  Religious matters: synagogues, ritual slaughter (*shehitah*), rabbinical figures. Sports clubs, games. Historical events: pogroms, German occupation of Poland during World War I; antisemitism and antisemitic policies of politifcal parties and the Polish government; Migration from Poland; lectures on need to leave Poland because of anti-semitism and economic depression. The bulk of the posters in the YIVO Archives pertaining to Yiddish theater in Poland are housed in the Esther Rachel Kaminska Theater Museum Archive (Record Group 8).
