The nigun (melody) was composed to accompany the words of "Bar Yochai" sung on Lag B'Omer, a holiday which takes places between Passover and Shavuot. The nigun and goes back to the time of the Beis Aharon (Reb Aharon Perlow of Karlin (1802-1872), author of Beis Aharon, the second Rebbe of Karlin/Stolin.

Karlin was a suburb of Pinsk and was the center of the hasidic movement in Lithuania.
