Times are so bad that many formerly wealthy families have now been reduced to poverty and are starving. "And we don't use the word 'starving' as simply an empty expression, but in the fullest sense of the word, REAL STARVATION." It's harder for these formerly rich people than for people who were already poor, because the former are too embarrassed to beg openly.
