Title:
Fundraising appeal for Old Age Home
Description:
Fundraising appeal for the Old Age Home on Portowa Street, Vilna. Whereas before World War I, the home was supported by communal taxes and a subsidy from the municipality and also realized revenue by taking in laundry, now it has fallen on hard times and has to rely mainly on charitable contributions made in honor of weddings and other celebrations. The 280 inmates require, among other things, 300 pounds of bread a day, "including white bread for those who are sick," and fuel to heat the baths. Synagogues are called upon to ask for donations in exchange for being called up to the Torah during services and landlords are asked to sign up all their tenants as members who will pay monthly dues.
