Historian, writer, lecturer, lexicographer, bibliographer, editor.  One of the founders of "Amopteyl", the American branch of YIVO.  Member of the Board of Directors of YIVO. Co-editor of the YIVO bleter  and the YIVO Annual of Social Science.  Co-editor of the Leksikon fun der nayer yidisher literatur (Biographical Dictionary of Modern Yiddish Literature), N.Y., 1956.  President, Yiddish Pen Club. Director, Research Library of the New York State Psychiatric Institute.  Wrote numerous works on Jewish history, concentrating on the history of the Jews in Poland. Co-author, with Leland E. Hinsie, of the Psychiatric Dictionary. Born in Warsaw, Poland.  Immigrated to the U.S. in 1923.
