Philanthropist, communal worker, Zionist leader.  One of the first members of the Hibbat Zion movement (1882), he founded the Ohavei Zion society in Vilna.  Delegate to the First Zionist Congress.  In 1900 was appointed representative of the Zionist Organization in the Vilna district.  Active in various industrial ventures in Palestine, including the establishment of the Geulah Company for the purchase of land in Palestine and the Carmel Wine company.  Founder of two Hebrew newspapers, Ha'am and Ha-aretz.
