Title:
Letter from an impoverished man to Baron Rothschild
Description:
Letter from Isak Flescher, Lwow or Zaleszczyki, to Baron Rothschild, the successor to "Ha-Nadiv Ha-Yadua" (the well-known benefactor), Baron Edmond de Rothschild (1845-1934), Paris. Flescher asks Rothschild to send him funds so that he may emigrate to Palestine. He had been active in the Zionist youth movement, and then spent many years in the field of Zionist education. He and his wife of 4 months have given up on the idea of university  to focus on aliyah, but their efforts have met with absolute failure. The Zionist movement has let them down with false promises. He has heard that emigration certificates may be purchased, but has no funds. He therefore turns to the Baron, begging him to use his connections with the Jewish Agency to help him to emigrate. As an alternative, he asks the Baron to lend him the required 1000 dollars, which he assures him will be paid back once he gets to Palestine. He mentions his wife's deteriorating physical and mental condition because of her disappointment about their inability to emigrate, begging the Baron to take this into consideration.
