A portrait of Morris (Moishe Yonasan) Grunstein (1926 - 1995). Born in Pilica, Poland, Morris Grunstein was a descendant of the well known rabbinical figure Rabbi Yonasan Eybeshutz. In 1940 he was sent to Auschwitz 3 and managed to escape 4 years later during a death march to Germany. Weighing only 60 pounds, he traveled to Italy where he recuperated and later studied to be an electrician at the ORT school in Italy. In 1950 he moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he married and started a family. In order to provide his children with better Jewish educational opportunities, he moved with his family to New York in 1958. He owned and operated supermarkets in Laurelton and Forest HIlls. 'Good Food' in Laurelton was the first kosher supermarket closed on the Sabbath in Queens.
