Letter from the Chair of the Sholem Aleichem Library of the Jewish Society for the Dissemination of Culture and Education in Bialystok to Leibush Lehrer in America. He explains why the library purchased 1107 Polish books and only 547 Yiddish books in 1928. It's not because they hold Polish in higher regard than Yiddish, but simply because many more Polish than Yiddish books are published. Yiddish books published in America are too expensive and it is hard to obtain Yiddish books from the Soviet Union. Nonetheless, most of the local Jews are not proficient in Polish, even a decade after becoming citizens of Poland and they mainly read Polish books in order to learn the language. Most still prefer to read Yiddish. He promises to send statistics about library users in a subsequent letter.
