Title:
Note to a rabbi from parents of a son serving in the tsarist army
Description:
Kvitl (written request to rabbi asking for a blessing or advice) to Rabbi Eliyahu Guttmacher in Graetz (Grodzisk Wielkopolski) from Shmuel Yankev ben Khaye and his wife, Sore bas Libe, Klobuck. They request that the rabbi pray for their son Dovid to be freed from "imprisonment" and that he no longer be required to serve as a soldier. He had number 38 [in the draft lottery], and is now in the reserve. Dovid visited the rabbi six weeks ago and was assured by him that he wouldn't serve as a soldier. It is hoped that the rabbi's blessing will come true. This son supports his elderly parents and if he returns safely, they pledge that they will pray for the rabbi's longevity.
