Born in Stare Miasto, Eastern Galicia. Weichert was a theater director and producer, writer, lawyer, and teacher. Played important role in development in Yiddish theater in Poland between the wars. Staged many plays with the Vilna Troupe. Founded the Yiddish Drama School (1922), the Yiddish Repertory Theater (1929), the Yung Teater (1933). During WWII, presided over Jewish Social Self-help agency in the Warsaw and Krakow ghettos and later (1942) founded the Judische Unterstutzungsstelle, which fell under control of the SS, which then appropriated relief funds. After the war, Weichert was tried in Poland for his involvement with the SS, but exonerated by the court. Settled in Israel in 1958.
