Born in Odessa, Russia (now Ukraine) in 1899, Ida Kaminska was the daughter of Yiddish stage actress Esther Rachel Kaminska (1870-1925) and stage producer, Avram Izhak Kashe. She made her performing debut at age five and her first movie role in 1912 in "Mirele Efros." She is best known for her work in Eastern Bloc Yiddish theater; however, she also made a few films over her long career. Later, she became a leading actress with Warsaw's Kaminski Theater. With them, she toured the Soviet Union for a few years before returning to Warsaw to found the Ida Kaminska Theater, where she became both a star and a director. She appeared in a few Polish films from the mid-1920s through the mid-1930s. During WWII, Kaminska lived in Russia, but after the war returned to Warsaw and created the Jewish State theater of Poland. In 1967, the troupe toured the U.S. and Kaminska remained there. She died in New York in 1980, and was interred in the Yiddish theater section of the Mount Hebron Cemetery in Flushing, New York.
