Meir Dizengoff (1861-1936) was a Zionist politician of Bessarabian origin and the first mayor of Tel Aviv. In 1885, in Odessa, he joined the Hovevei Zion movement and was closely associated with fellow Zionists Leon Pinsker and Ahad Ha'am. Later, he became an ardent follower of Theodor Herzl, whom he met in Kishinev. In 1905, he moved to Palestine, settling in Jaffa. When Tel Aviv was recognized as a city in 1921, he was elected mayor. He remained in office until his death in 1936, not including a three-year hiatus in 1925-1928.
