Description:
Petition from the Jewish community of Mstislavl to Countess Saltykova, landlowner, referring to the recent crop failures which have caused financial difficulties. The community asks the Countess to support their request to the Russian government to be allowed to use buildings as collateral in financial transactions. They express their gratitude for the Countess' previous kindness and generosity to the Jewish community, especially in 1843 when she interceded to prevent the banishment of the community. They also refer to her past help to the poor of the Jewish community during the Passover holiday.
