Initials of the Russian 'Obshchestvo Rasprostraneniya Truda Sredi Yevreyev (Society for the Spreading of Vocational Work Among Jews).  An organization for the promotion and development, through vocational training, of skilled trades and agriculture among Jews.  Founded in 1880 in Russia, ORT operated voctional and agricultural schools, as well as agricultural colonies and factories.  At first ORT functioned only in Russia, but later extended its activities to Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Bessarabia, Germany, France, Bulgaria, Hungary and Rumania.  Extensive assistance programs were also set up in Africa, Asia, South America and Israel.   

The ORT Society in Vilna was established after World War I.  It provided vocational, agricultural and handicraft training courses and supported Jewish agricultural cooperatives in and near Vilna.
